Meet Dick

Dick has a dream, a day-job, a wife, and two kids. Dick knows there are only 24 hours in a day, and its impossible to bring harmony to all.

The day-job takes a good bit of your time.

The kids need your time.

The wife says you don’t spend enough time together.

And the dream wants prime time.

Own your time

The problem isn’t time. Everyone has the same amount of time in a day as you do. Look at Bob Marly, Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, and Albert Einstein. I know, but you have kids and they take all of the precious little time you have. Right? Well Bob Marley had 11, Edison had 6, Lincoln had 4, Einstein had 3 and I have two.

The phrase: “A successful businessman rarely makes a great father” is bullshit. These people don’t know how to manage time effectively or just work for work sake to feel productive.

The problem is organizing your time. It’s amazing how organized you can be in your life. Managing the budget, the family, the kids — yet when it comes to “Me Time” you’re scattered brain.

This is how you do it

The way I look at it, (on average) you can find 3-to-4 blocks of “Me Time”. You have to know where to look and (most importantly) schedule your time in the calendar like any other event.

1. Morning

My mom use to always tell me a quote from Benjamin Franklin: “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

TRY IT: Tomorrow, set the clock to 4:30AM and work on that one thing you’ve been wanting to do. You’ll be completely amazed at what you can accomplish when the world is sleeping.

2. Lunch break

Do you have an ½ hour for lunch? 1 hour? More? What did you do on your last lunch break?

At the moment, I’m writing this article in a coffee shop with a pen and pad. Oh, and for you stay-at-home moms/dads who say “I have no lunch break,” what did you do on the last nap-time or the last two hours while your kids were watching at Team Umizoomi? Don’t waste your lunch break, avoid the water cooler and get the hell out.

TRY IT: Next lunch break, pre-make a quick meal (I normally make a peanut butter/honey + banana sandwich) that doesn’t take longer than 5-10 minutes to prep and eat. Grab a book or notepad and head out to the nearest park or coffee shop and just sit there for 30 minutes. Try to go to a different place every now-and-then. Just relax.

3. Night time

The way my schedule is, when I get home, I normally spend time with my kids doing activities outside until dark. Then it’s homework, cooking, eating, cleaning, bathing, story time and bedtime. Now what? Hop on the tube and see what’s next up on the queue, stare other people’s junk on Facebook, browse the web until boredom? This is your time, don’t waste it.

TRY IT: Tonight, get a kitchen timer and set it for 90 minutes (or use the iPhone timer). Focus and work on the most valuable thing you can do right now and nothing else. After the 90 minutes are up, walk away from what you are doing and take a breather. Go for a walk, stare at the stars, take a hot shower, whatever.

4. Drive time

This might not be for everyone, but I have a 40 minute commute to and from work every day. That’s 80 minutes a day just sitting in my car, and that’s on a good day. I listen to audiobooks, now at double speed: it takes some getting used to but you can easily comprehend and finish it in half the time. Mainly, I listen to podcast: Podcasts are like blogs for radio. There are thousands of podcast to scratch any niche. And, did I mention, they are absolutely free? Also, check out iTunes U: world-class universities providing free content from their courses. Or, turn it all off: Take a vow of silence when you’re in the car for a week or two — I’ve had some of my best ideas doing this. Same can go with train/air travel.

TIP: Bring a tape recorder or use your iPhone to record any ideas or plans you come up with instead of texting while driving.

TRY IT: Tomorrow, turn off the radio and just listen to your thoughts when you are in the car.

Maximize “Me Time”

So now, we’ve found at least 3 hours in your day. Some days things come up that you have to take care of, but for the most part you have 3 hours.

It’s your hour, don’t waste it by watching tv, surfing the net, or tinkering around on Facebook.

Think of the single-most important thing you can do right now: relax, meditate, run, ride a bike, read, write, idea thinking?

TRY IT: Grab some paper or smartphone and make a list of things you like to do. Call it, “Things I like to do”. Break it down into two topics: Learning and Doing (see example). Revert to the list when you are scheduling your “Me Time”. This list is not set in stone, and you should add/remove items as you live your life.

Schedule your “Me Time”

Ok, now that you have an idea in mind of the things you want to do, it’s time to figure out when your going to do them. Try using numbers to break down time periods: 1 = morning, 2 = lunch, 3 = night, etc.

Here’s an example of my time:

— ME Time —
I found my time and I’m not going to waste it anymore!

SATURDAY
Dad day

SUNDAY
Family day

MONDAY
1: Read book
2: Work on ideas
3: 15 minutes strength workout

TUESDAY
1. Write/journal
2. Run/crossfit
3. Work on ideas

WEDNESDAY
1. Read magazines
2. Writing at coffee shop
3. Movie night!

THURSDAY
1. Read book
2. Run around the lakes
3. Work on ideas

FRIDAY
1. Read book
2. Write at park
3. Dinner with friends

Stop Dicking around

It’s time to do something for yourself. Turn off the tv, phone, email and go outside.

Do what’s worth doing.

2011 changed my life forever, the best year yet. I thought differently, listened to myself, and learned a lot in the process.

Looking back at it all, it started with the snowball method — once I successfully quit smoking (one of the hardest things I’ve ever done) I was looking for the next challenge, “high” if you will, to take on. I felt that I could do anything I set my heart to.

Here are a few challenges I experimented with in 2011:

Favorite reads of 2011: One Simple Idea by Stephen Key and The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss.

One Simple Idea – From patents to selling your ideas to large corporations to do all the hard work for you, this book explores the interesting path of licensing intellectual property. And collecting royalties while having fun. This was a much needed and well written book.

The 4-Hour Body – Much like his first book did for me (The 4-Hour Workweek), this book will change your life forever if you read and try it. Tim finds interesting and fun hacks to the human body to achieve maximum result with less effort. Simply brilliant, it’s an encyclopedia to living better. I owe a lot of my achievements to this book, like: losing 50lbs., a complete lifestyle change, building muscle, running long distances, and getting into wine :)

Quit smoking

Even though I quit smoking in 2010, this was the first major milestone that lead to everything else on this list. This was the snow ball at the top of the mountain, once it started to roll and build momentum I could start the next challenge with confidence. For more check out the article on Quit Smoking: Escaping the Addiction.

3-day apple fast

I ate only apples and drank only water for three days. The preferred apple of choice: Organic fuji apples. One tends to know a lot about oneself during fasting. I learned that I was a snacker. I picked at food all day long, especially when cooking or making the kids something to eat. Fasting is like a high and the longer you do it the crazier you get. I did it for detoxing/cleaning the body including the liver, kidneys, and it’s the best way to prevent disease. Apples are high in fiber and malic acid, which is known for increasing energy and endorphins. It’s an amazing feeling. After about 18 non-stop apples later, I didn’t touch the damn thing for almost a year. But I did feel great and the best part?.. No mess, no cooking, no cleaning, no trash, no worries — just eat an apple when hungry and move on.

Going from 0 – 300+ miles

I started out like most americans, on a treadmill, with my latest Nikes, iPhone with GPS app, playlist, and workout plan. I was forcing myself to run to achieve a goal or to beat my latest mile, huffing and puffing at the end and hating running. What’s the point? Who am I running from? Why the hell am I doing this?

All sorts of questions like that entered my brain as I was pushing the very last mile out, sounding like a walrus in labor in the process.

One day something changed. I was on vacation in Florida and went for long run – raw. No goal, no iPod, no treadmill, no shoes, no shirt, no problem. I just kept running on the beach in the sun, barefoot, taking a dip in the ocean now and then to cool off. Before I knew it I went over 12 miles – the furthest I’ve ever gone in my life (9 miles previous) and I felt like god. Since that day, I now run with just my shoes, shorts, and peace of mind. I enjoy running now—love it. It’s like a form of meditation. It has forever changed my life, I’m not balanced unless I run.

Want to read a great book on running? Check out Born to Run, it will forever change the way you run and think about running.

Fast Food Fast

I was a fast food junkie. On average, I would have eaten at a fast food restaurant about 5x a week. Every week. My brother-in-law and I made a bet at the beginning of the year to go on a Fast Food Fast for 30 days. Only home-cooked meals, no fast food – with the exception of Subway for lunch (both of us had day jobs). This challenged forced me to cook and I learned more about cooking that year than the last five years combined. At the end of the fast I received a text from my brother-in-law with a Filet-O-Fish and fries he was about to wolf down. And on my way to Micky D’s, something happened. I looked around at the people who are waiting in line and realized that I no longer a part of that demographic. Since that day I’ve been on a fast food fast for live. With the exception of coffee, bean burritos from Taco Bell and veggie yellow-egg omelets from Subway—delicious. I haven’t been back and I don’t plan to.

Cracking a book

For the first time since grade school, the first time in my life, I opened a book for pleasure. I enjoyed it. I’ve been listening to audiobooks and reading ebooks on the computer but nothing really feels the same when you get a book and touch the pages. Reading is one of the single most important educational materials available, just don’t go on information overload. Take your time, read only what is relevant to what you are focused on now and if it sucks, get rid of it and move on. I found that by taking notes on my iPhone (chapters, titles, keywords) and indexing the most interesting page numbers to be quite helpful. Now I have a single note that sums up the book for a reference at a later time.

Idea generation

This year I started to share my ideas and I found that when I do, people begin to share their ideas with you. Plus nothing compares to instant feed back and first impressions (especially facial expressions ). One day I grab a series of notepads: 1 large 5 subject notebook dubbed as “The Next Best Thing” and a hand-full of steno pads to keep in the car, at the office and at home for when something comes up. My “quick-note system” is simply a note on the iPhone to jot down a line or two or I use the voice memo app when in the car, but when I want to flush it out, I put in the big notebook.

Doing 200+ pushups a day (still do)

I started doing 10 pushups (10 = set) 7x a day. 1 set before and after breakfast, lunch, and dinner – I also did an extra set for a “snack”. I’ve done everywhere I gone home, work, friends/family, restaurants (public bathrooms are disgusting, coffee houses are the best.) Later on, I change it to 30 a set, thus 210 pushups every day. Do some sort of exercise around meals (before, after, or both) to burn fat and to kick your metabolism into gear. That topped with eating a high protein, low carb diet and you will see results in no time.

Losing 50+ pounds

Losing that much weight is the result of a few different actions, but the main cause is from the snowball. You see, I was on the high from quitting smoking and naturally wanted be healthier and live an active lifestyle. Therefore my confidence was up and I was ready for the next challenge.

We are all like kids in that we want rewards for our actions. So by getting little rewards one at a time, can achieve something great.

And here’s what I did:

Drank only water, coffee, and organic tea

Ate a high-protein breakfast within 30 mins of waking.

Two microwaved eggs, 1 tablespoon of black bean salsa (Newman’s Own makes the best), and a handful of spinach. No mess and delicious!

Started running twice a week

Combination of plyometric and crossfit exercises

BIG ONE: I ate a low-carb, high-protein diet. That means no white foods (bread, pasta, or starch of any kind), I was eating stuff like cabbage tacos and bean/green/tuna/hot sauce combinations.

One “cheat-day” a week. Even the kids look forward to this day (I still do). It’s the day to eat anything you want. Anything. I take the kids to the donut store or make chocolate pancakes every saturday. And eat all the carbs I can find. I have this “junk corner” where when I want something that is “junk”, I put it in this corner until saturday rolls around. Then it’s like a kid at christmas.

I did this for about 4 months. Lost the majority weight (35lbs.)

2012 is going to be even better

Now that the ball is rolling, here are some game-changing challenges to face in 2012:

<del>Juice Fast for 5 days</del>

<del>Launch a product… stay tuned :)</del> (Now available)

<del>Bike the Mississippi (Baton Rouge to New Orleans, 100 miles)</del>

<del>Run a marathon (26 miles)</del>

Complete a triathlon (1,500 swim, 25/m bike, 6/m run)

Complete a Tough Mudder or Spartan Race

De-clutter life: remove 100 things

Write a blog post every month

Go vegan for 30 days (no animal by-products: meat, milk, cheese, etc.)

Drive a Dodge Viper: Why the hell not

Enjoy every minute of it :)

The world is what you make of it.

It’s time for change, to do what’s worth doing :)

On October 25, 2010, after chain-smoking 4 cigarettes I was fed up, pissed off and I slammed this pack of cigarettes against the wall—I knew at that very moment, that was it. Something was different this time, a revelation happened, I started to enjoy being a non-smoker.

At the age of 14 I started to experiment with smoking, like most, I choked on it and told myself that I would never be a smoker—what is all the hype about? By 15 I was hooked. Not knowing that the next cigarette would last 11 years, I felt that I could quit anytime I wanted, I knew what I was doing, I was completely in control. I was dead wrong.

It consumed my life

On a good day I would smoke nothing less than a pack a day and during social occasions, it was more like a pack every couple of hours. It’s funny to look back now and see how every task was revolved around smoking. It becomes more of a habit to take time away from a task to smoke than it does to focus on the actual task. I tried most traditional ways to quit, commit lozenges (my personal favorite), cold turkey, cigars, one-a-day, dip—the works. And the longest I’ve ever gone without a cigarette was 1 week, and it KILLED ME.

The Easy Way Method

One day, Scott (my brother-in-law) and I where talking about another failed effort to quit smoking when he brought up The Easy Way To Quit Smoking by Allen Carr. Yeah the title sound like a hoax, “The EASY way, huh”, but after doing a bit of research, his method seems to work for a lot of people and he has an almost-perfect rating on Amazon. Even celebrities like Aston Kutcher, Britney Spears, Ellen DeGeneres, Anthony Hopkins and David Blaine have all successfully quit from his method. I know what your thinking… Hell, if Britney can do it…

It’s not magic and it won’t work for anyone who doesn’t want to quit smoking for good. Think of it as teaching your subconscious mind that instead of thinking: “Damn, I have to give up smoking—I enjoy it, I like to smoke”, to “I really enjoy being a non-smoker, I can get use to this.” Once you can change your attitude towards smoking, you can change your life. It only took me 6 times listening to his audiobook to get that, but my mind eventually got the message. And another good thing about the audiobook is that it’s something to listen to while your still smoking and it’s long—about 5 hours.

If you really want to quit smoking, this book can help reinforce positive messages during the negative periods prior to quitting.

Here is a video from the author, sadly after quitting for 23 years and being a successful author, he died of lung cancer at the age of 72.

I would love to hear from anyone else who has quit smoking, when and how? Let’s hear it in the comments.
